History

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we inspire our children to become lifelong learners; demonstrating a love for exploration and enquiry. This is achieved through the fulfilment of statutory requirements coupled with rich and purposeful learning opportunities.

History is an important, creative discipline that helps us to understand and be a part of our world. At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we want all pupils to build an impressive, chronological knowledge. From considering how the Ancient Romans helped shaped Britain to comparing how the children’s lives today are so different to those in the past. This depth of understanding helps our children to both know the past and understand the present.

At Our Lady’s, we adopt positive ‘can do’ attitudes, believing all children can achieve in History, and we, therefore, teach sophisticated substantive and disciplinary knowledge. We develop the children’s understanding of substantive concepts over time by repeated, meaningful exposures to embed rich understanding of these key concepts. Through our broad and balanced History curriculum, we take the children beyond their everyday experiences whilst allowing them to see themselves in the school curriculum and relate their experience to that of children in the past.

Our Lady’s History curriculum encourages our pupils to be curious and creative thinkers who develop a complex knowledge of local and national history and the history of the wider world. We want pupils to develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and be able to explain and analyse historical evidence.
